Settings & Privacy > General. Unfortunately though, it is the single most addictive activity to date.

Just deactivate it. Your profile won't show up for people, but you still appear in their friends list, but only as a blank icon. You can always reactivate it and have your same friends and everything the way you left it, when you deactivated it.

Log in to your FB account and delete account here:
https://www.facebook.com/help/delete_account
Note that unlike deactivating an account (https://www.facebook.com/deactivate.php) which gets reactivated when you log back in, deleting a FB account is permanent.

if your on your phone then just go to your account settings then hit general and at the very bottom there should be a button where you can deactivate your account and your all done :-)
