I've been noticing that you have to pay to continue playing games on facebook why is that? And shouldn't they be free?

actually they are free.... you just have to be more patient
they make the goals really easy to achieve in the beginning, to get you addicted, and then as you progress, you either have to wait til the next day to play for another 10 minutes, or pay money
that's how they many money (they being Zynga, who makes the games, not facebook)
and sorry, but not everything is free...
just play as much as you are allowed to for free, and then continue where you left off from the next day, and they will still be free

Maybe times are tough and maybe the game creator wants a piece of the pie too.
I like to buy the games I like and then play them till I find a new one.
