I thought the idea was to take a picture with your phone, add a filter to it and post/share it with the rest of the instagram population. but I've been seeing so many professional photos (not taken with phone) uploaded to peoples accounts. What is your opinion of that? or is that what you are supposed to do?

You have the right idea, what you said is what you're supposed to do. Although, some people may be photographers and import their photos to their iPhone then use a pic from their phone and edit it on instagram! Sometimes people just do it for fun, to gain more followers etc. I still upload pictures that I took though.
