Health promotion, as defined by the World Health Organization, is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health.[1]. In the USA, health promotion is much more narrowly conceived as "the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health."[2] Means of health promotion include health education and social marketing.

Social marketing is the systematic application of marketing along with other concepts and techniques to achieve specific behavioral goals for a social good. Social marketing can be applied to promote, for example, merit goods, make the society avoid demerit goods and thus to promote that considers society's well being as a whole. This may include asking people not to smoke in public areas, for example, ask them to use seat belts, prompting to make them follow speed limits.

social marketing has nothing intrinsically to do with health promotion.
social marketing is particular approach and emphasis for marketers, synonymous with altruistic marketing, cause-related marketing, etc.

Health promotion is soley focused on promoting a healthier lifestyle, healthy products, exercise or diet programs, or diet-related products or approaches.
