Have they removed the sidebar ticker on Facebook where you can see friends activity. Or have I messed up my settings somehow?

Facebook ticker is still at his place.
Try removing your cookies and caches of the browser.

I'm having the same issue. So I really don't know myself. But it will most likely go back to normal eventually.
