Do people have to have you in their phone as a contact for them to be able to add you on snapchat? Or does snapchat have some kind of mutual friend suggestion thing like on facebook

There is no mutual friends. You are only able to see 3 max friends of theirs. And that would be the 3 people they snapchat the most. If you are looking for someone, the name has to be EXACT! if not, the person you are looking for won't pop up.
