...today I don't get notifications even though more comments are being made. I didn't change any settings etc..
What causes this?

Yes this happens and nothing is wrong with your settings. Facebook just realizes that people probably don't want infinite notifications. If you comment again, then you should start receiving notifications about any comments afterwards.
Make sure you have clicked "follow" on the status if you want to make sure you receive notifications.
