It is an ipad. It showed them connected to facebook through mobile device but it said on fb messenger they hadn't been active in 16 hours.

No it cannot show.

Sometimes its shows you active(Online) when you didn't properly logout from your device, Normally it will notify you as Offline when your packet data stuck or Network inactivity.
