my son's e,mail address ends in .com and he's based in the UK

No. It's a sub domain of .uk,.and there are other sub domains. It's the most popular, and not all .co.uk addresses are actually attached to physical locations in the UK, So don't rely on that, either.

It does not mean it is based in the uk It means that it has been registered under the domain name " co.uk" making the website be granted more trust
