So on my notifications my insta says this boy who I'm friends on facebook just joined but I looked at his profile and he has pictures from 44 weeks ago. I have a picture with him on Facebook but don't follow him on insta. I am also private. Any explanations?

Instagram was bought by Facebook last year because it is a good business venture. You may see this if you use your Facebook account to log into Instagram.

Facebook owns Instagram so they have probably linked your contact accounts on both Instagram and Facebook in their system.
