Use names of real social media websites or make one up for story? - Chloe - 10-13-2012 11:47 PM

In my story should I include the names of the social media my characters use like facebook and twitter or should I make something up instead. Its realistic fiction.

I think you should make up some social networking platforms. But detail it up in trendy peppy manner.

You should give it a different name, just so you can avoid all the copyright issues and stuff. Same basic ideas and concepts in the network, but different name.

It probably doesn't matter. But when I think about networks like mIRC, that no one uses anymore and probably most people have never heard of, if I published a book back when that was actually a thing and referenced it, the reference would be lost on today's readers, at the same time to explain something like facebook could seem completely condescending to the reader. So while you can do it, it might be better to just make something up.
