So I would need to add white space to the left side of the cover photo to avoid having the profile picture cover part of the cover photo., like the opposite of cropping. Is that possible?

That is your profile picture...You have to upload a profile picture and your cover photo

No, you can't because facebook currently do not offer such editing,
and this is common with everyone because it is facebook's default theme
