I have just signed up for Instagram today, and I accidentally followed everybody on facebook friendlist (and now I have un-followed them again)
I feel like it would be slightly awkward, if certain people that I don't talk so much to on my friendliest, would think that I was following them.
So do people get notified when follow someone on instagram?

Yes, one gets a notification (and in some cases also a push notification to their cellphone) when someone follows them.
