If you don't have permission, you are hacking into that account and that is illegal. If you saw that the person's FB was open on his or her computer, then it's not illegal to look, but it definitely unethical, which would make you untrustworthy.
If that person wanted you to know their business, he or she would have shown you the messages. Stay out of things that you have no business being in.
