a trend is something thats like in style but when you talk about twitter its like monkey see monkey do

To opt into a convo, you use hashtags, such as #ihatewhen.
So if you want to say something about Toyotas, you add #toyota to the end of your tweet. This makes it more searchable and attracts people who are interested in the subject matter.
The topics with the most hashtag references are called trending topics, tts. Sometimes they are serious, sometimes silly.
