is it common for facebook to take far longer than most websites to load the login screen and that your browser and computer freeze up while it loads
this nearly always happens the first time I log into facebook after I switch my computer on, if I visit fb again in the same session it is normally fine

No, Likly you need to tune up your browser. By that I mean clear its cache and cookies. The process is easy, if you dont know how. But, different for every browser. A quick search of "(browser) clear cookies" should help. Or post it here.
Alt, it could also simply be simply that the browser and network drivers have not completed loading yet. However this would effect more than just FB

No it is not normal. When I click Face Book
it opens.
