They make money via advertisements and (some) sell their user's information.

Yes, they are legitimate ways of earning money. They buy your posts for advertising and marketing to get other social media site users to check out there websites and spread the word. It also depends on your relevant followers, your popularity and other marketing factors.
Twitter might be the better site for this than Facebook. Because ONE popular user can get a tweet out and have his/her followers retweet it in a matter of secs. And the word spreads out like wildfire.

definitely real. I started making money using Facebook 2 weeks ago and already got just over $800 believe it or not.
