What are the different forms of social media that exist today? Provide examples of different social media and their primary purposes.

What do you mean by social media? Newspapers, television, computer communication, telephones, letters, ??? This is all I think you mean. You could include dating services, personal ads (newspapers) churches, social clubs, service clubs, political parties etc. etc.

Social media can take many different forms, including Internet forums, weblogs, social blogs, microblogging, wikis, podcasts, pictures, video, rating and social bookmarking.

Examples include: Twitter, FaceBook, Digg, Flickr, Youtube, Blogger, Reddit etc etc etc

Advantage: It enhances your brand visibility.

There are basically 7 forms of Social Media.

1. Blogging -- Wordpress, Blogger
2. Social Network -- Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, Hi5, LinkedIn
3. Microblogging -- Twitter, Google Buzz, Yahoo Meme
4. Social Bookmarketing -- Digg, StumbleUpon, Mixx, Reddit
5. Video Sharing -- Youtube,Hulu
6. Broader Content Sharing -- Enips, Scribd, Slideshare
7. Forums -- Yahoo Answers


There are many sites which fall into one or more of these categories. Some people call even social gaming as a part of social media. We may or may not include it.
