For example, if I clear the cache for twitter or instagram on my phone, what will happen?

The Cache in a web browser makes copies of images and pages within your web browser. This helps to reduce loading times for your most visited websites and allows images to load quickly if not instantly.
Clearing your cache erases the copies of these files created by your web browser. This will force the cache to save new copies of the information, and display the most up to date content. Your cache will rebuild itself after it is cleared.
