I have had a facebook account for five years and my profile and friends are set as private. Only my friends can see my profile and no one can see my friends list. I just made a new account but seem unable to hide neither my profile nor my friends list!
Is there a way to do so? Thanks

Facebook changed the rules. You can no longer hide your profile from others - your profile picture and cover picture are always public.
You can hide your friends. Go to friends (on your profile, click Friends right under the cover pic), then click the pencil and Edit privacy.
