So i went under privacy settings and set it to friends only, but that seems not to be working because non-friends are still able to see my friends and likes and posts. Any ideas?

that main setting doesnt apply to everything
to make your friends private, do it this way

and each status update you make has its own privacy setting... use the audience selector to control who sees what you post
