I only have one follower on twitter because all of my friends hate it. so how do i get more followers?

Just start following random people on twitter. About 20 - 30% tend to follow me back within the next few days.

The best way to get more followers on twitter is to post interesting tweets.
Be clear & concise with your tweet and make sure you include something like a keyword or maybe hashtags in your tweets so your tweets will be found in twitter's search.
Be interesting, useful, insightful, funny... Like being a good dinner party guest or something.

Here's a few tips that could help you get more followers (note I said 'could' not 'will'):
1. Be interesting. Don't just write stuff like "I'm watching..," or "I'm playing..." or anything else like this. Write your opinions about the film or game. Talk about politics and current events. Write, in the words of Family Guy (or whatever they were parodying), what really grinds your gears.
2. Follow lots of people and hope they follow you back.
3. Advertise your account on other websites such as this, imdb, and facebook. For example put something like "Follow me on twitter @yourusername" or "Follow me on twitter - http://www.twitter.com/yourusername" after every question and answer on here. Or on forums such as imdb where you can have a signature, put one of the above as your signature.
4. Tell friends and family (surely they ALL can't hate it) to join and follow you.
5. Use hashtags on your tweets. For example put #Ashes in a tweet about the ashes or put #film in a tweet about films. I'm sure you already know this but to use hashtags you have to be following the user called hashtags.
6. Use follow friday. This is where, every Friday, you tweet the names of users you've discovered that week or just users you enjoy reading and think others should follow. Here's an example of a follow friday tweet:
#ff
@daraobriain
@DrSamuelJohnson
@MandyPandy32
@davidschneider
note the hashtags can be either #ff or #followfriday
If you do this then whoever you've mentioned in your tweet might see it in their mentions section. And if they do they may end up following you.
