For example, I am shocked at the racist statements made by Obama and Holder.

There is a strong tendency among white Americans (not just Republicans) to deny that racism exists in America. It's denial, if you admit that there is a problem then you have to do something about it. If you deny the problem even exists then you don't need to do a thing.
