i have all the other tabs like the light bulb, shopping trolley and magnifying glass but not goodreads

Hmmm - let me go check my Paperwhite...
My Paperwhite (version 1) has firmware 5.3.9 and B024 starts the serial number (the only US version 1 Paperwhite serial number starter).
(information found in Menu-> Device Info)
(Note - a US Paperwhite 2 should have serial numbers starting with B0D4, 90D4 or for the 3G version B0D5)
I have no Goodreads tab. I also checked Mange Social Networks inside settings (may have been in the read settings). It only give me the option of linking my Kindle with a Facebook or Twitter account.
From what I read, the Goodreads feature is for Paperwhite version 2 only (and for US, Canada & Australia only currently) and the support for it is in new firmware that is in the process of being sent to the Paperwhite 2's. So I recommend leaving your Kindle Paperwhite 2 fully charged and sleeping with Wifi on overnight for a while until your gets the firmware update.
OR
(still Paperwhite version 2 only) you can manually download the update (I recommend charging your Paperwhite 2 first and then leave it connected to USB power after you drag the update over to make sure it has enough power to apply the update.

I see no indication yet that Paperwhite 1 will get Goodreads integration.
