Hard Drive making a slight scratching noise after checking for HD issues? - Three55 - 02-19-2014 12:27 PM

I was having hard drive issues(beeps/clicks, error code) so I decided to check the harddrive for any issues. I held down F8 at start and chose to scan the HD for any problems. No problems were detected but now it's making a very slight scratching noise. I'm pretty sure this sound is the HD and not the fans.

Is it anything I should be worried about? I already backed up the laptop so there is a restore point. Anything else I can do before just getting a new harddrive?

BAck it up and replace. Sounds like it may be failing. HDD hardly fail but when they do its almost instant. Try replace it bud

Hello Three55,

This is already sounding like a bad HDD!

I would highly recommended doing a data backup before doing anything!

After that I would try in run diagnostics to make sure it is a bad HDD. Just to make sure, once you find out the results then you can go from there.

Note: Depending on the manufacturer there should be diagnostic tools for you to use

HP is usually by hitting the "esc" key and Dell is hitting the "F12" key upon powering on the computer

You could try Seagate and Western Digital diagnostic as well to make sure your HDD is bad.

If it is indeed a bad HDD, replace the faulty HDD and reinstall OS.

Sometimes DVD drives can cause noises as well, if there is a disc that's jammed in the drive, it happens!

Hopefully your issue is resolved or at least you know the culprit!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help!
