Should I go to the cops with this online bullying? - Karen - 02-19-2014 12:27 PM

I don't know what to do anymore and I'm just sick of putting up with it. It's been going on for 5 years now, gotten increasingly bad in the last 2-3 years. It's my boyfriend's kid's mom (she's 27 years old). She calls me names (fat, ugly, whore, psycho, you name it). She says I'm "inappropriate" with her child and that I cross lines with her. She makes me out to be this crazy lunatic stalker and says she won't give my boyfriend her address because of me. I have never ever EVER physically stalked her or put her child in any sort of danger or made her feel threatened at all. I run a daycare so these kinds of accusations about her child could be very hurtful to my career. She found my care.com profile and reported me on there saying I had "false information." She uses my full name on her rants about me on twitter/facebook. I have asked her a few times stop talking about me and talk TO me so we can work out our problems and she ignores my request and just goes at it 10 times harder. I do not retaliate or even acknowledge her attacks (except for those two times I requested she leave me alone and another time when my boyfriend told her to stop).

My friends say I should just stop looking at her stuff and it won't bother me anymore. As easy as that may sound, it just simply isn't going to make the problem go away. She is succeeding in turning people against me because they believe her lies. I'm terrified she will make me lose business because of her accusations and then I'll have no career. If I go to the cops will they just tell me to ignore it, too? Will they think I'm foolish for being bothered by something so immature (because I sure feel foolish for feeling like I need to contact the cops for "bullying" at this age)? I just want her to stop. Like leave me alone and pretend I don't exist; how hard is that? What can I do?

If it's been going on for that long, you may have a solid case. Save evidence of her stalking you (email). Google the laws in your state about cyberstalking and see how it defines it (every state varies slightly). Maybe a restraining order might work for you. You may even be able to sue for defamation or slander if it's affecting your business.
