im use to playing myspace games, where you can add a friend, make them part of your mob, then delete them from your friends list but they stay in your mob. is that the same for facebook games?

Yes it is the same.

actually it depends on the application - if you have to invite your friends, they stay in the application even if you delete them from your friends list. However if the game automatically puts any friend on your list playing that game in your ingame list, then if you delete them they are no longer part of that game.

No, it's not the same for Farmville.
One application is entwined with the other.
If you delete a FaceBook friend who is also FarmVille neighbour, they will disappear from both applications.
