Facebook is a social network through which users can catalog, communicate with, and 'learn' about their friends and the people they know using one simple and user-friendly source. For many it's a great way to stave off loneliness, as it allows one to share thoughts and ideas with others without having to meet with them or even disturb them in any way. It's particularly good for keeping big families in touch and up to speed, so that if Grandma's feeling a little lonely she can just log on and there's all her kids and all their kids, a few keystrokes away. (assuming grandma knows how to use a computer.)

On the other hand, the information presented on Facebook, while not necessarily 'false', is more often than not deceptive in a mostly benign sort of way; users creating presentations of themselves that don't necessarily reflect the person in any accurate manner, instead presenting themselves in the best and most interesting light. Maintaining a flashy facade of one's self can eventually make someone feel very isolated from the truth of their own life, a massive list of friends none of whom can really support you given they don't really know you can be a lonely thing. There are also those who don't understand this aspect of Facebook's nature, and who believe every facade presented, while unable to present one of their own. This can lead to the notion of everyone having a much better, much happier, much more loved life, and can leave a user feeling their unimpressive facade is indicative of an unworthy or sub-standard existence, which can be a very lonely feeling.
