What is Social media? - Ram - 10-14-2012 12:59 PM

I want to know the exact meaning of social media...

It's published person-to-person communication that's available to a mass audience. Published content that can be produced or edited by anyone can also fall into this category. "Social media" generally implies some relation to the internet but pirate or HAM radio broadcasting, public-access channels, and probably some other media can be considered social media as well.

"Social media" isn't a broadly-used term. You could probably be a dink and argue that all media are inherently social if you really wanted to.

According to Wiki:

"Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable (measurable) publishing techniques."

(Kaplan and Hainlein: "a group of Internet based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.)"

Social media has 3 components;

1. Concept (art, information, or meme).
2. Media (physical, electronic, or verbal
3. Social interface (intimate direct, community engagementm social viral, electronic broadcast or syndicaton, or other physical media such as print).
