They are the current "big thing". Once teens find the next "big thing", interest to social media will decrease, but not to zero, so social media will be with us for a long long time.

Like any technology, it just helps people be what they really are. Some use it to gossip and bully, some use it to revolt against dictators.

Media has been around since the dawning of time, people, and animals, have found ways to communicate with each other through some of the easiest but also some hard ways through time.

The media that we have now just makes it easier to do the things that have been going on for thousands of years, I highly doubt that it's going anywhere as long as any living thing occupies this earth. (:

No, it is definitely not a fad. While the individual sites may not last forever (i.e. MySpace) they have fundamentally changed the way we communicate and the way we use the web.
