Why are people still talking about Princess Diana? - RIcky - 02-19-2014 12:40 PM

She died FOURTEEN YEARS AGO. Amy WInehouse only died less than 3 years ago and you don't hear people going on about it.

16 years. Also, are they? Fucking hell.

Even here in the UK, the only time you hear her mentioned is with regard to a tabloid newspaper, The Daily Express. There's a running joke that all their headlines are either about Princess Diana, immigrants or house prices.

Diana is a part of history. As Princess of Wales, she made an impact on the world. Her hairstyles, her wardrobe, her beauty and her caring nature attracted media and world interest. Diana was going to be future Queen Consort of the UK until her divorce from Charles, which made her a figure of historic note. Heads of state, world leaders and their representatives often are of historic note.

While still a royal Diana was involved in many charities; one charity was for AIDS/HIV and Diana was the first royal to publicly shake hands with an AIDS patient to highlight the fact that the disease was not easily spread through casual contact. Her charities included those for education, homelessness, cancer, hospitals, domestic violence, the arts, bulimia and anorexia nervosa, the deaf... After divorcing Charles, Diana pared her charitable interests down and chose to take on an even more visible role by taking on the issue of abandoned land mines. Abandoned land mines injure and kill many people all over the world.

Diana was in the public eye for over 20 years because she was a royal and a representative of a head of state, the Queen. Heads of state and ambassadors are newsworthy. Monarchs and heads of state are also part of history of the world. Entertainers are also of note, especially those who were particularly successful, pioneered an art form.

Diana's tragic death at the hands of an impaired driver only cemented her status.

Amy Winehouse was an entertainer who was known to have serious problems with addiction. Her demise was tragic, but given her history of illness before death, and the health problems that addiction can cause, the death was not totally unexpected. Amy Winehouse had a great voice and a signature look, but she did not have the social impact of a princess with world media attention focused on her charities, her personal life, the history of the British monarchy.

Amy Winehouse's death was clear cut - there are no questions about what happened.

There are still lots of conspiracy theories about how Diana died, and these are still being addressed.

16 years ago, actually. A lot of people had a fixation on Diana and still like to believe conspiracy theories about how she died, fuelled by the tabloid Daily Express, whose fixation on front page Diana stories is starting to make it look as if it has some kind of collective mental obsession.

What?

Lady Di is dead?

I didn't know that.

- skinnyDestroyer918 - 02-19-2014 01:11 PM

Well, why don't you tell us? You are the one asking!

Who is Amy Winehouse? Is she anyone?

- flyingbug - 02-19-2014 01:21 PM

Diana is mother and grandmother to future Kings (William and George).

I just had a read through your Q's and A's, fascinating, truly fascinating. Perhaps you should stick to THAT type of question in the future.
Diana, Princess of Wales, did a lot for the people of the U.K and for others around the world.
Amy Winehouse, a very talented singer and one who abused drugs and alcohol and in the process, her own body, which eventually gave up under the strain, unable to keep the same pace as her drug deranged mind.

Princess Diana had a fairy tale wedding to a prince with a kingdom and gave birth to two heirs. The fairy tale soured as her husband never gave up his mistress and the ink was barely dry from her divorce when she died at a young age in a freak car accident.

Her death caused great outpouring of grief as her subjects felt her to be a compassionate person who attracted much publicity by her charities and sense of passion and fun times with her sons. By contrast the royal establishment was viewed as out of touch and uncaring.

Had Princess Diana lived to be in her 50 or 60s and not died an early death she probably would have been less newsworthy like Duchess Camilla.

Amy Winehouse joins celebrities who have had an early death due to drug and alcohol abuse. There is many similar people who have done what she did in the entertainment industry. I don't think she had any causes that she supported
