It helps because when people post there links into there twitter post. Example: bit.ly/ct8347 not a real link. The more people that click on it the more traffic will be generated to the site. Thus the more traffic you gain the higher google ranking you will get. But for it to be effective you better have some real followers who really are interested in what you are posting otherwise it will probably just be looked at as another spam message. Which won't be clicked on because nobody likes spam. Unless it's with eggs. Hope that helps.

There is no SEO to perform on twitter directly. You can use Twitter as a medium for broadcasting something useful to your followers with a link (so acquire some first). That could get you visitors. The actions of these visitors can help your website SEO
e.g. if they retweet so even more people know about your broadcast. If the retweet propogates above a critical rate, your tweet will catch on to an upward spiral and get even more visitors. If these visitors then like what you have on your landing page, they will bookmark, share, etc. which can get you backlinks and help with SEO. |

Yes, I would say Twitter won't help with search engine optimization, but it is a great way of marketing your products and talking to potential customers. If you are new to SEO as you say, then you'd be much better off learning a bit about it. Check out this video course in the source.
