Basically, left-wing means you want the government to control you, and right-wing means you want to control the government.

Essentially Left wing is about a nanny state, right wing is about individualism and taking responsibility for yourself.

They represent different ends of the political spectrum, right wingers tend to support lower taxes and less government control in markets, however they support more government control over social issues and a larger military.
Left wing people support more social freedom, as well as the creation of state run utilities and services to help the economically disadvantaged. |

Left wing is usually socialist and is about the state focusing on protecting the poorer classes and often believes in state control of industry etc. They are often about the working man and in its ideal form is about everyone being equal in pay and opportunity. Right wing politics is often about being self-sufficient, low taxes and a hard work ethic, it is concerned with free enterprise and in a society in which a person can create wealth, they are capitalists by nature.
