they can if they want to - everything you do on the internet is tracked and saved by the corporations running the website, including everything you look up on google and every other search site

but not to worry - everything is tracked, but you only get in trouble if you are under some sort of investigation

they need a court order to use the evidence in a court case

but yes, every private message is still saved on their servers for 7 years, even if you completely delete it - be careful what you do online
