What would you think of someone who had only 43 facebook friends?

My first thought would be that they are a private person. Not to mention, everyone starts at zero. It also depends how old you are (you've met fewer people when you are younger)... I have friends with 2000 some friends, but they're only close to about 30, and only know a few hundred. Some people friend request every person they ever went to school with, played sports with, meet out, etc. Some people friend request people they don't know, or accept friend requests from strangers. This is not a safe thing to do, and I do not recommend it. I'm guessing you're younger. I'm 23, and all my friends are mid-20s. Most of us are now going through and deleting almost everyone we don't feel we wouldn't want to talk to again. A lot of young people act like facebook is a huge popularity contest, and it's not. If you find someone you want to be friends with, friend request them...don't worry about the quantity, worry about the quality.

BTW - facebook is linked to depression. If you ever study behavioral reinforcement, you will understand this better, but notifications and likes are like rewards for your brain. You anticipate them and hope that further using facebook will give you more notifications. When you don't get notifications (or you're on so often you don't notice how many you get), this is a form of punishment and you'll feel depressed. I wouldn't delete your account if it can help you keep in touch with old friends.
