As someone who once seriously wanted to end their life I'd say just be there. Don't try and push the issue because they may think you are only sticking around because of their state of mind. Instead let him know as often as you can how much you love him. How devastating his loss would be to you. How much that would upset you. If you know about others who care about him,friends or family ask them to express how much they care about him to him. You don't need to tell them details. If they ask just say I'm worried and I have the feeling he'd like hearing it. Don't saying anything else.
The thing that kept me from following through was the realization was that there were people who would miss me and I couldn't do that to them. So I forced myself to stick around and things got better. If he sticks around he may reach a point where he finally gets the help he needs.
