When I was busy exploring social networking, I was using Multiply.com. It was pretty cool, and it was attracting far more of the intellectual crowd than Facebook. You can set up your own blog, post music and videos, create and involve yourself in groups, and do a bunch of other stuff. This was last year and it may have changed, but give it a shot. http://multiply.com

(Edit: I just logged into my account and it's been two years since I've been there. It's still running though.)
