Women - would you go out with a man who had a 'stammer'?

I have a friend who is good-looking, recently divorced (for private reasons), who has a dreadful stutter.
He is fine with me, because he is confident that I won't try to finish his sentences and I am patient.
With other people, his stammer gets worse - and they lose interest or actually avoid him!
On the subject, why is it rare for females to have a stammer?
