Perhaps you don't know WHY you should secure it. Please download Firefox and Firesheep and discover what anyone who connects to your network can do in your personal accounts. Anyone who connects to your unsecured network can read and reply to your email, change all of your account settings except password, and that includes you Facebook, Twitter, and any other accounts' PRIVACY settings. This is because network traffic is sent in cleartext on an unsecured network. Furthermore, you can be held responsible for anything that is illegal that ANYONE does on your internet connection. If someone connects and accesses kiddie porn, you can go to jail--and people have! If they steal music, you can be held responsible.
If you really want to share your bandwidth, use WPA-2 and put the password in the network SSID. That way, people can use it, but the connection is encrypted so personal data isn't in cleartext. You're still open to the kiddie porn and music issues, but your personal data, and that of everyone who uses your network, is protected. Messenger Service on Windows (NOT Windows Live Messenger--the network tool) is off by default in Windows since XP Service Pack 2, so net send doesn't work unless you have both enabled it in Services. Since you can get the other person's email via Firesheep, you could send them email--even email from themselves. Remember this is also illegal and people have gone to jail for it as well. A man was even convicted for reading his own wife's email. I am NOT recommending you contact these people. In fact, despite your caution, I still recommend you secure your network and NEVER connect to ANY unsecured network. It is EASY for ANYONE who can Google Firesheep to access and change your personal accounts. Ads |
