I don't know if you are being silly, but I'm certain you are being human.

Your closest friends would most likely wish for a second chance if you'd express this sentiment. I suggest you resend the letter to those closest to you, adding what you said here. Because, they may not have responded to a request for money (we all get bombarded with so many of these, and we are not all as generous as you are habitually,) but perhaps they will respond to your request to be emotionally supported (by being financially sponsored in the race.)
