I think we live in a time where technology is for everyone, the real question is about unsupervised use of that technology.

There is shades of gray in this area, personally I think i would allow my child to use facebook only because I would have installed a key-logger and a program allowing me to see what activity they would do on the computer.

My job as a parent would not be to respect the private life of the child but to always know what's going on in it's life to be able to give support, and at the opposite of when they talk in person, Facebook is easier to intercept.

So basically its as dangerous to let a child using Facebook unsupervised as letting it watch TV alone. it's the presence of an adult that makes it safe.
