How to stop getting emails when friend updates Facebook status?

Go to the arrow at the top left of the blue bar next to home and click it, a pop-up menu should appear with one of the option being account setting. Click it and go to the notifications setting. You should be able to edit the settings there. For this, I think there will be a check box saying to send important notifications only. Checking that should resolve your problem.
