Just quit bailing on him! Go on a date and see if any sparks fly. If they don't, just act like you thought you guys were going as friends the whole time. But I really think you should give him a chance, he obviously wants to give you one. And most importantly, screw whoever doesn't approve of him, if he's the one they can deal with it. It's your life.
