I agree with the other posters here. It wasn't inappropriate at all. Dinner party etiquette dictates that it is inappropriate to talk about politics and religion because these topics tend to spark heated debates.In your case, you were already talking about it and it's just natural for you to be curious and ask that question. You can just let it go or if you want, you can say something like, "I didn't mean to offend you. I'm sorry."
