Considering the context of the discussion it was not inappropriate. Obviously she is uncomfortable revealing that information, the best way to answer that question is to say sorry if I offended you or move on. I see nothing wrong with your answer, but a general rule of conversation is not to ask what race someone is, what religion they are, or their political viewpoints, bringing up these topics is a surefire way to offend someone.
