Why do people care more about their looks and dont pay attention to the problems in society?

What does society teach people to pay more attention to? What control do we have over anything other than ourselves? I apologize for asking more questions..but it's one way to help you think about the answer, and why it is happening. If someone is really generous, selfless, helpful or has any other type of loving, magnanimous quality, how often does it make the news. Does it have any "marketable," value? I believe we are taught to be superficial, and to judge ourselves and others by appearances...The main reason? they can sell it...and we have to buy it. If people weren't becoming so selfish, it wouldn't all be about them. Why is so much on u-tube, Facebook-etc.. LOOK AT ME! Here I am! Aren't I special? Aren't I the best looking? People crying out to stand out and be noticed, crying out for some attention, love. People are becoming mostly, voyeurs, watchers. It isn't about character, character is swept under the rug (Clinton had a big part in that) As long as one is beautiful, all is forgiven. Sensationalism has become salable, and good looks excuse and cover up everything-Who makes the most money? Hollywood. Does that make any sense, at all?

There are so many things for sale, to stay/become/appear,more attractive or beautiful. If we aren't beautiful, we aren't as worthwhile, important, intelligent or as desirable...never mind our character, intelligence, talent, skills or abilities. People can call you all kinds of names-mean, selfish, stupid, cruel...it rolls off their backs. Just call someone ugly, or their girlfriend, sister or mother, ugly-Boy...that will get them mad. I always admired Barbara Bush for this one particular reason. She looked old, Sun damaged skin, really wrinkled but she never got botox. She wasn't overly concerned with her appearance. She was old..that's what people do, they get old, they age, SO what? She was able to age, without trying to hide it and was more dignified.
It seems so narcissistic, spending thousands of dollars for plastic surgery, when it could be used to do so much good, if used in other ways.
SO, in my opinion, there are many reasons...and they are unfortunate and pathetic.
