Eating organic food is not included in the definition of veganism. By all means, go organic if you want to, but it's not a "requirement."
Plenty of cereals are vegan. Check the ingredients lists. Some include Raisin Bran, Cheerios, Total, and Life. Fortified cereals are preferable. The vast majority of your diet should come from whole, unprocessed foods: beans, nuts, seeds, lentils, produce, oatmeal, brown rice, wild rice, and quinoa are good places to start. Most dried, boxed pastas are vegan. Check the ingredients lists. Stick to whole grain pasta. Do a twitter hashtag search for #whatveganseat. Check out the pictures, descriptions, and recipes that people post, and the blogs to which they often link. This will give you a lot of ideas and you will find some recipe blogs you'll love checking regularly for inspiration. An idiot-proof vegan dinner: whole grain pasta, cannellini beans, vegetables, toasted walnuts, olive oil, and spices all tossed together. It has something from every vegan food group. Another idiot-proof dinner: burrito with rice, black beans, vegetables, salsa, guacamole. Take B12, Omega-3 DHA, and Vitamin D supplements. Eat fortified foods, but also eat foods naturally rich in them. Buy nutritional yeast and sprinkle it on your pasta. You can also make salad dressings and sauces with it. Buy ground flaxseed and put in your oatmeal, your smoothies, and on your toast. Eat walnuts and cook with olive oil. Eat mushrooms. Get sunshine. Check some vegan cookbooks out of the library. Read a book on plant-based nutrition, written by a registered dietitian. |
