How do you take pictures of your computer screen on your computer?

The PrtSc key will copy the entire screen to the clipboard. Then just paste into a graphics editor, like Paint.

Alt-PrtSc (Hold the Alt key, then press PrtSc) will just copy the active window.

One caveat. This copies what the computer thinks is on the screen. For what you describe this is fine. But if you are trying to capture some odd effect on your monitor (lines in the image etc.) then it will not work. In those cases you just have to get out a camera and take a picture.
