Help! I need to market my website online!?

The Internet provides a wealth of marketing opportunities for entrepreneurs, musicians, promoters and others who have a brand that they would like to share with the world. Specifically, you can use blogs, as well as social networks like Facebook and Twitter, to get the word out. If you want to get the most from these online avenues, though, you will need to use an effective approach that generates the right kind of attention.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

1
Create a Facebook page specifically for your business, product, artistic endeavor or other brand. Visit the Facebook home page and click the link that reads "Create a page for a celebrity, band or business." This allows you to set up a page for fans, and is preferable to the traditional Facebook profile for marketing because it allows you unlimited followers and eliminates the need for your followers to manually "friend" you.

2
Set up a blog that suits your needs. For a professional appearance, consider buying your own domain name from an online hosting service. (See Resources.) Otherwise, you can use a service like Blogger, Typepad or Wordpress to set up a free blog. Choose from their available page templates or download your own template from the Internet that suits your brand. A professional appearance is important.

3
Reach out to bloggers who deal with similar brands. Do not look for competitors, but complementary bloggers who may be of mutual benefit. For example, if you sell real estate in East Los Angeles, you might reach out to bloggers who sell real estate in the San Fernando Valley. Offer to trade links on your home pages and participate in the comment streams of your fellow bloggers. This will help you to build exposure for your own brand.

4
Sign up your brand on Twitter and use hashtags in each of your tweets (individual posts) to generate attention toward your brand. A hashtag is a word or phrase prefixed with a number sign, such as "#livemusic" or "#freestuff." When people search for your hash tag or related terms, your post will appear in the results. This will help you to gain exposure and build your Twitter following.

5
Encourage your friends, families, co-workers and acquaintances to follow you on Facebook and Twitter, and on your blog. This will help you to start out with a small, humble following and encourage others to follow you as well. You can also reach out to other users on the social networks who may have an interest in your brand, but do not spam users by simply advertising your product or service. Try to build a genuine rapport with these users.

6
Post regular updates on your blog and social networks that pertain to your brand, but do it in a way that will pique people's interest. For instance, if you have a band, you might write "Playing House of Blues Friday night; see you there." If you have a product, advertise any discounts, deals or contests. Do not simply use the networks to bombard people with tired sales pitches, but appeal to the interests of your followers with deals, events and new offers.
