You can set the privacy settings so no one but you and your friends can see the wall. You can also hide when you're online so other people can't see that you're on. Many teachers have public facebook pages they use to tutor or help students, and colleges facebook pages often have advice for getting in, insider tips from other students, or even opportunities to network with professors.
